Welcome to Kathmandu Kids
A ragtag group headed up a Nepalese Peak (Yala) in November 2009. All of them experienced travellers who are long past their youthful backpacking days, they all feel pretty strongly about giving something back. Joining them was a group of equally passionate volunteers who helped to make the the first two Kathmandu Kids Quiz Night a huge success raising over $51,000.
To walk through a third world country and see the faces of smiling yet poverty stricken kids is a bittersweet experience. It is incredible to see how these kids– who have no material goods and limited future opportunities- embrace the joy of life. It is a humbling lesson.
We would love it if you could help us to continue to make a bit of a difference. We have chosen to support a wonderful charity Sunrise Children’s Association Inc. Australia (SCAI). Every cent we raise goes directly to further the kids education and the people of the Kalimati Slums. No fees from the charity at all.
Our continued focus is to raise funds to allow the slum kids from Kalimati to be schooled for one year. In 2010 there were 118 children. This is an annual fundraiser that SCAI undertake. This years target figure is $30,000 so we can further extend the programme.
The last two years fundraising efforts went towards:
- All School fees for 118 children for 2 years
- School transport both ways from the Kalimati slum for 1 year
- Uniforms, shoes, bags, books and stationary for the students
- The development, rebuilding and operation of a classroom on site at the slum to introduce the kids and their parents to the benefits of education
- The buying of 250 tracksuits for all the slum children to protect them from the winter cold
- Assisting a slum family rebuild their ‘home’ that was burnt to the ground
- Establishment of a training centre to teach the parents candle making, sewing and English
We had an overwhelming level of support for the last two years events and look forward to the September 5th 2011 Cocktail Function!
